Importance of Body Language

Body language is very important when interacting with others – whether colleagues or potential clients. What is body language - the gestures, movements, & mannerisms by which a person communicates with others, these are verbal and nonverbal. Some of these include:

  • Head movements: Tilting your head upwards & forwards may suggest superiority and can look arrogant. Nodding your head slowly shows you are paying attention, while faster nods indicates you agree with what the prospect is saying.

  • Facial gestures: People believe the look on your face. Stay in control of your face. Engaged eyes and relaxed mouth are safe and inviting open expressions.

  • Posture: Avoid negative postures such as folded arms or crossed legs. Rather mirror the prospect’s or strike a balance between subtle movements & a ‘stiff’ posture

  • Eye contact: Your eyes should send the same message as the rest of your body. Avoid negative actions such as looking away, glancing sideways. Raising your eyebrows suggest agreement or interest.

  • Space: Remember to respect personal space. Be careful – hand gestures and movements can have cultural meaning

A clean, neat appearance will also positively influence the conversation as the prospect will feel more at ease.
